Default $300 to fix this???

A few months back I had my car parked in my school's lot. The normal lot wasn't in use b/c they were redoing the track right next to it and the trucks needed to get in and out, so students had to park next to the playground in a gravel lot. I tried to find the best space I could, as always, and went in a corner with a little tree on my right side so no one could squeeze right next to me.

Later that day I went out to the car and noticed this on my passenger side:

I don't know what happened or how...the best guess I've gotten yet is that a little kid on a bicycle probably tried to squeeze between my car and the tree and the brake lever scraped my door up. Afterall, I WAS parked next to a playground so it made sense. Thankfully it isn't huge but it still bothered me so the same day I went to my town auto-body place to get a quick estimate out of curiosity. They told me it would cost $300 at *least*. I asked why so much but didn't put an argument since I had and still don't have much knowledge on this type of thing. He told me the whole door would have to come off the car and this and that.

I don't live close to any other places but I am going to be checking into some others, so I was just wondering is $300 seems right? Here's a few more pictures to get a better idea of what it looks like, even though none of them really seem to capture it the right way. Sorry if they're really big, thanks for any help!

Buff out what you can, and buy some touch up paint...temp fix, but something like this will happen again if its a daily driver.

^^Werd. I'm dreading getting my car completely repainted b/c of cost for metallic paints.

Look at all the metallic in your paint. Thats the reason for the price. I have heard from several shops it is VERY hard to color mathc metallic paints to where you don't notice a different in the amount of flake in the repaired area. Which if you think about it makes perfect sense. Your car originally was painted with the same gun all over & the exact same paint mixture. Not to mention it looks like it went to the metal instead of just a minor surface scratch.

Like mentioned above it is because of the paint. Regardless of the size of the scratch they have to mix up a custom mixture for you. My suggestion is to fix up what you can, or find any other noticible blemishes and have it all taken care of at the same time. Save you money in the long run and will look as good as new. Trust me, I've been in the same situation.

Think of it as a chance to learn how to use touch up paint.

that sucks bro! These guys are probably right though with the touch up paint. I still feel for ya though. Some people now a days just don't respect the efforts of others to keep their ride looking nice.

Think of it this way, that kid was P-I-S-S-E-D when he saw what you did to his handle bars!!!

Yep, that's about all you can do considering it will PROBABLY happen again. Mine is a daily and it's been keyed, kicked, and brushed up against by some other car's bumper. It's sad and it sucks but there's nothing you can do about it. Unless you live in South Africa where you can install lethal anti-theft devices to your car. I wouldn't mind having flamethrowers on the side of my car though

Hahaha I HOPE it was a bad day for him if that's what it was! Haha he probably didn't even notice though!

But thanks for all the replies and info. They didn't say anything about the color but you've all gotta be right, damn pewter! The car isn't daily driven anymore thank goodness! I tried to buff over it but it's obviously a litttttle deeper than that. Definitely going to get it fixed though hopefully before summer, I was planning on doing hockey stripes right before this happened, so much for that.

Really sucks when this kind of stuff happens. Even with the car I daily drive now, I went out to it recently, again at school (this time college, like that makes it any better ) And notice a subtle dent above my front wheel well. It's not noticeable but still. Amazing careless people....

Just wondering, am I even able to get a match of the color? How would I go about doing that? I'm debating about trying to fill it in myself but I'm not great at this kind of thing...so we'll see.

WOA!! THATS CRAZY!!

I had an encounter with a dumpster in which i backed up into with a sctarch a bit bigger than the size of my hand as well as brown scuffs from the dumpster in several dif. places. The scratch was also nice and deep, it scratched through the paint and into the fiberglass to were it was jagged. I though it was gonna cost a fortune. My dad knew some guys and it was fixed for like $290.

That does suck! But the price for the repair doesn't seem too crazy to me. If there are no other blemishes I would get it done.

I tried to keep mine looking like new, park far away from everything, don't let anyone get too close to it, etc...in the end, it got scratches all over it anyway.

I figured i'll try to bring it back and spent about ~20 hours wetsanding and orbital buffing-polishing. It looked awesome when i was done (black was like a mirror). I was so proud...then about 2 days later i go out to the garage and see that one of my dogs jumped up on the sail panel with muddy paws and scratched all down the side.

So now I don't car anymore about the scratches and just keep it clean and waxed.

Eventually i'll get it repainted, but i know it's almost impossible to keep it perfect unless it stays in a glass case. That's not what these cars are about, it's about driving them and enjoying 'em.

Pewter is hard to match, My car was repainted at some point in time and you can see blotches with more gold tinge to it on a couple spots. Depending on the light you can't see it though, pretty much when it's not in direct sunlight. Of course I noticed this after I bought the car. I litterally saw it as soon as I got it in my driveway after driving it home from CT where I purchased it . I originally checked the car out when it was overcast outside so I didn't see the blotches.

Damn, that sucks...off topic but where in CT did you buy your car? I saw quite a few pewter TA's around here for sale a while back, I doubt it's the same, but just out of curiosity. But anyways I know what you mean about blotches...my car was never repainted but in direct sunlight on angles it looks a little blotchy, it's really strange. When I saw those TAs for sale I looked at them and noticed they looked blotchy too, who knows. I love the color, but hate how it does this.

I guess I can try and match the color or see if there's another way to go about this. I just don't want to make anything worse.

Trust me, I really felt like it when it happened. Thankfully I'm out of that school and far far away. My car rarely sees my colleges parking lots...those people drive like maniacs, don't even look when they back up for just one thing. I'd put money that one will run somebody over easily!

I guess the price isn't really bad, it just sucks that I'm trying to save to mod the car (after waiting close to two years) and then this came up. It's somewhat minor but being a perfectionist gets the best of us! Only way to keep things perfect is if it sits in the garage but that's no fun, you're right. I could never do that anyways. There's a few other really minor scratches on it but I'll let that slip since it's not noticeable, and the car's perfect otherwise. Gotta pick what we're crazy about I guess!

I don't remember where in CT it was, I bought it back in 04. Car has been around though, originally from flordia, then to CT, now to me in NJ.
