Wha you want to do is first wash and then clay bar the car then use a cleaner wax a sealer/glaze and then wax. A buffer with a micro fiber bonnett works great to get that deep shine.

After a swirl remover, you should put a finishing polish, and then wax. 3m's FI finishing polish or menzerna is a popular brand. If you are really in a bind and have to use otc products, then pick up a paintcleaner, go over the polished surface, and then you'll be ready for wax.
