detailing a red car
detailing a red car i just picked up a 2001 red z28 from a guy who lived in a small town. surprisingly, there are no rock chips, but it was covered in dust and the paint is pretty swirly/scratched for only 41k.
what are some cheaper products out their that do a good job of restoring the color and eliminating some of these scratches?

Anything you will put on by hand won't last very long. Because with most of the stuff you buy at Wally World or auto parts stores, all you do is cover up the scratches for a short period of time, after a few car washes they will come right back.
I'd spent the money and find a good detailer, and then maintain it.

for a small area, I would recommend Meguiar's ScratchX .. if you are going to do the whole car, then ScratchX would not be a good choice.
For the whole car, grab someTropi-care TC-8 Swirl Cutter it will do a good job of light swirl removal by hand. If the pad Tropi-care recommends doesn't seem to be cutting enough, you can use a terry cloth pad, and get a little heavier cut out of it, but that may require you to go back over it with the pad, to get it looking perfect.
If you need to try and remove a little heavier swirling by hand.. then I would suggest Megiuar's #2 ..

awesome thanks! i had never been to the tropi-care website, and was thinking their products were a little more expensive. ill definitely be ordering some of their stuff!
Good suggestion on the tropi-care; I used Meguiar's #2, as part of the 3 stage wax that they have (replacing #3 w/ nxt), and it worked well on the Pewter Z I had. I'll give tropi a try on my red

I would go to a good and reputable shop in your area and invest money into a detailing to get rid of the swirls and scratches for good by machine using 3M or Meguiars, then, I would keep taking care of it myself.
