Default Messing with your license plate illegal?

Ok we all have state plates, and Im waiting for my custom one (4-6months) I was wondering if anyone ever sanded down the plate or repainted it (not the numbers or tags) but just the state symbols or whatever and put another piece of art such as a firebird there?

License plate rules could cause trouble for motorists
Wednesday, February 14, 2007, 06:27 PM

Texans who cover even a small portion of their license plate can be stopped by police, ticketed and perhaps arrested for the offense, the state’s highest court ruled Wednesday. The 8-1 decision left three judges holding their noses - proclaiming the statute “uncommonly bad” but acknowledging that the letter of law prohibits drivers from encasing their license plate in a frame that obscures the state name, state nickname or even portions of the design.

That's for texas...but there are probably similar rules in other states

I wouldn't mess with it

Can't even have smoked covers here in Wyoming. Took them three years to tell me. Most states plates are done with a reflective paint that makes it easier to get a "radar" return when the 'mounties' clock you.

ive been warned for my plate border covering about 1/4 inch of the word texas on my plate....personally i think it is dumb and just another reason for a cop to pull over a suspicious car that hasn't actually done anything wrong

100% illegal. If you sand off and repaint a license plate, how are they going to know what state you're from? I think a license plate is considered property of the state (even though it's on your car and you pay for it) so therefore altering it would be illegal. I like your innovative thinking, but there's a reason you've never seen it done before!

I did a light mist to mine with black spray paint to take away the 'reflectiveness' of it. It just looks like it is dirty and not altered. Works for me.

You could always get a second vanity plate and modify it as you wish and use it for shows. If you "forget" to take it off, have your real plate with your stickers on it in the car and say you "forgot" to swap it back after a show.

Completely illegal as it should be. Here's why: cops run plates randomly. It's perfectly legal and every traffic does it. And they have to when you're speeding. If they can't quickly identify what state your plates are from, how are they to know if the car is yours or stolen? And how would they know if you have warrants or a CHL? It's just the way it has to be.

Baically yes its illegal, it obstructs the officers view of the original plate design. Also plate covers and tint covers are illegal as well. Radars dont work so good on em haha shhhh

i got the same idea from 1sicv8.. actually i think i pretty much copied him... I masked off everything else and painted my letters (SS4LUCK) pewter to match my car. I got a ticket about 2 days after i did it and the cop told me it was a nice touch and that i shouldnt get hassled because the white part is the reflective part so it wont matter what color the letters are
