How to clean engine and engine bay?

I'm sure there have several threads in this already but I couldn't find anything. Please give some suggestions on DO's and DON'Ts and products to use when cleaning your engine and engine bay for the first time.

simple green in a spray bottle. hose with no pressure. use a small brush for dirt that won't come off with just light water and simple green.

be carefull when you hose your engine bay down. beware of getting the belt and pulleys soaked because on some of the ls engines the belts will squeak. if your engine bay isnt rediculously dirty i would recommend taking a bucket of warm water a scrub brush and and damp towel, wipe everything off and for the hard parts to get to use the brush. then when your finished with it all use some liquid tire dressing for your plastic parts to make them stand out nicely.
