Removing scratches

Removing scratches I've had a few noticeable small scratches on the driver's side door for a while and now I'm noticing a few more around the vehicle with some inescapable rock chips. Is this something I could get out myself on a weekend or would it be easier to pay to get it done? How would I go about removing these if I did it myself?
FYI caution...I made a few small scratches on the hood this morning while trying to remove bird crap. I hate that stuff. It's like acid rock on your car.
