Default Best way to use simple green to clean an engine?

I've read that simple green is the best product for cleaning an engine, but what is the best way to do it? The instructions on the simple green bottle say to wet the area first.

Should I lightly spray down the engine compartment, and mix the right % of simple green in a small plastic spray bottle and then spray it over the engine and let it sit? After that rinse it down? Is there anything I'm missing? Any help would be appreciated!

I usually will get the enigne wet, spray it down (too lazy to dilute it, so full strength), let it sit, maybe scrub it a little with a brush, and then rinse.

I will never put water or Simple Green on my engine again. It killed my front knock sensor. You could see where the water got under the intake and corroded the metal.

I use a toothbrush. Allows access to hard to reach spots, and let's you be directional. Wipe with clean rag afterwards. Spray in small amounts, away from electronics. I found it easier to do one side at a time, followed by the front of the engine. Clean it real good once ( like 4 hours, my car was 3 year daily driver ) then you can maintain it.
