porter cable question i know and i read the sticky but it didnt say anything, so the wife got me a 7242 for xmas and i need some pads to use, i checked on some of the sponsors and found the 5.5 are a lot less than the 6 or 6.5" pads, they will work just fine right? Other than taking a little longer is there any difference.
Well if I remember correctly the backing plate is 6" so if you go with a 5.5" pad then you run into having to watch the edge of the backing plate not cutting into the car (if you go at a angle while buffing).
Congrats on a great gift. As stated above you need to be careful that the backing plate does not come in contact with your paint. The backing plate sold through Tropi-Care is right at 6". The pads are 6.5". If you found a backing plate that was 5" those pads might work.
