this might be a stupid question but..
I would not paint the stock grille. It is that textured plastic stuff, and it almost never takes paint well. Plus you're most likely going to hit it with a rattle can, which will chip off and look like dookie in a month.
If you're going to bother pulling it off at all, in my opinion you should replace it with a nice sharp SLP bowtie grille, or get the WW grille and paint that.

^^My stock grille COMPLETELY smooth like the rest of the car....just takes some sanding...paint has been on it for about year now, no problems at all.....still looks new....and as for the "rock chip" comment, that will happen to ANY grille....
Plastic can easily and nicely be painted as long as it is professionally done using the right stuff, I could flex my grille without any problem.
