Default What speed for buffing?

How many RPMs should you use when buffing? I have several "grinders" and buffers laying around and was just wondering if one of mine has the right rpm range to do the job.

High speed rotary polishers measure in RPMs as they spin in circular pattern. They are suggested for pros and heavy experienced users as they work very quickly and can be trouble in the wrong hands.

Machines such as the PC, UDM or Flex are measured in OPMs(orbits/minute). Average speed ranges are from 2000/2500 to 6000-9000 OPM. Their rotation is more of a random orbit pattern much like hand application of wax. They are much safer for the general group of beginner and novice users as they can not burn the clear coat. For cutting, machine speeds can be in the 5-6 range on the dial. For polishing, speed average of 4-5 on the dial. For finishing to apply liquid wax sealants and non-abrasives, usually 3-4 on the dial. These are just general guidelines. Each vehicle will pose specific detail scenario depending upon the severity of the blemishes to be removed.

On my dewalt...I typically buff around 1200-1400 If you go over that burning through becomes a problem really quick unless you are really skilled at it. Even at 1300 you can still burn through depending on what your buffing and what compounds your running.

Lower RPMs (under 1000) are safest when using a rotary buffer. With the random orbital I go as high as "5" for scratch repair and down to maybe "2.5" for product application.

im a detailer and been one for bout 3 yrs now.. and also into painting, and i use my dewalt around 1000rpm i feel its safe speed and with a foam pad your far from burning through, if you need to get the paint to heat up a lil though on some scratchs you can stay at 1000rpms and just move a little slower thats how i do it..
