Default Wet Sanded...Now What?

Hey guys,

next week when I get my new hood put on, i'm having the entire car wet sanded with some 2000 grit

what should I do once I get it back? I want to make the car look that good for as long as possible

I've always been a meguiers guy, but since i'm sort of starting over with the paint job...what should I do??

You have to buff it out.

What ever you do, don't wax the freshly painted hood for 60 days. The solvents in the paint and clear need to evaporate, so if you wax it too soon the wax will trap those solvents in and cause problems.

You can wash wash it right away, but don't wax it.

indeed. 3000 trizac from 3M on a DA, then get out the wool pad and some decent compound (i use wizards finish cut myself) and then have at it. then after the wool step, take a foam pad of some sort and do it all over again to get your wheel marks out. then wax!

I know I can't wax the hood

what about a polish?

Just trying to think of how to keep the car looking good. Or just give it a good cleaning/waxing after 60 days

Wait, only the hood is being repainted, but the rest of the car is getting 2000 wet sanded? Then they are gonna return it to you without buffing? You'll need to follow SS4's instructions for that, then. As for the hood, just keep it clean for a month or two, then clay bar it and put your fave sealant/wax on it.

Not the best idea to wetsand a stock paintjob. They don't use a lot of clear so it's easy to sand through it to the base. If it's too late then just get a good polishing compound like 3M's Perfect-It II or something like Menzerna Intensive polish and final polish using a DA polisher. There's no real need to go to 3000 grit although it will make the polishing step faster.

I don't mean to direct this at anyone in particular, but a lot of people jump to wetsanding without really understanding what it does. Clear coat is there not only for protection from scratches, but also for UV protection. Paint quickly fades in the sun without protection, and the more clearcoat removed, the more UV that gets through. Wet sanding problem spots is one thing, but wet sanding an entire car when it was not properly prepped for it (more clear intentionally sprayed in preparation for wet sanding) could certainly lead to premature paint degradation.

Get some wool pads and 3m 3000 rubbing compound. Follow with some Menzerna Internal polish and finish with Menzerna final Polish 2 on a black foam pad.

The wet sand was his recommendation to remove the factory orange peel. He thought just buffing alone wouldn't be enough (black car)
