All true HID's require ballasts (box) to operate. Here check this tread out:https://ls1tech.com/forums/showthrea...=840175&page=2

A good place to go is http://www.ledgauges.com/

HID's are pretty easy to understand....more of a misconception!

Just remember....the higher the Kelvin #, the less light is projected....think of it like this: Factory HID's on Lexus, Mercedes, BMW, usually use 4300k-5000k (which is the equilancy to natural daytime light), 6000k-10000k have more of a blueish tint to them, 12000k starts into purple...etc...

Hope this helps!

Correct. As the color temperature increases (the K number) beyound about 5000k, the lumen output decreases (actual measure of light). Also since the light gets blue-er and purple-er its less helpful since our eyes are least sensitive to blue light.

Also, I would recommend against using HID in a Halogen Reflector housing. It works OK in some housings, but usually not. Often it produces a bad beam pattern and glare to other drivers. The optimal solution is HID lights in HID projectors. Check out the Lighting FAQ for plenty more info. Another good site for info is www<dot>HIDPlanet<dot>com/forums. I'm on there too with the same screen name.

I kinda wanted to do the same thing on my 96 camaro, would these work well? http://ledgauges.net/catalog/product...roducts_id=118

No because they are the wrong size.
Also, I would recommend against using HID in a Halogen Reflector housing.

However, I'm going to beg to differ on the halogen housing. I will agree with you that a projector will benefit the most, but on these cars, the glare is not that bad on other drivers because of how low the car is.

I have to agree with the both of you as well! Granite, I have Xenon bulbs in a conversion housing, but the cut off is pretty close to HID Projectors...like I said, Pretty Close...not spot on! There really isn't much glare and scattered light, and I have yet to be flashed....even by on coming cops!

Now, HID Projectors are the best lighting for vehicles..without a doubt, and soon enough, I am planning on doing an HID Projectors Retro here soon! As far as I know, people rave about the HID's Kits from LED Gauges...so they must be good enough for people to put them in their cars...

Ultimately, HID's in Projector Housings are the Best thing to get, but HID's in different housings like Hella, will work just fine.
