can you use a lock up converter with a baloon plate, or does the clutch have to be removed to make room for a baloon plate

No the balloon plate has noting to do with the internal lock up clutch. Both of which can still be used. Vince

A well built converter will have a billet front cover. Which basically makes the whole front cover a balloon plate. A typical balloon plate is steel plate welded to a stock front cover. If you are planing on using lock-up at the track, then a multi disk is a necessity. There is just not enough clutch area on a single disk, it will eventually fail.
