I was on the freeway and punched it in 3rd and on the 2-3 shift I hit the rev limiter.

I then let out switched to over drive and it didn't do it. Is there a reason for this. My car has never been tuned and I have stock gears.

I tried a search but didn't really find an answer. It has only did this a couple of times

 

well there is a difference between the 2-3 shift in 3rd and the 2-3 shift in the OD position . The Overun clutch comes on during the 2-3 shift in the 3rd position this may due to additional fluid ussage cause a slightly longer time required to make the 2-3 shift than it does in the OD position , If your shift points are already very close to the limiter this small amount of time could push it to the limiter

 

Ok so should I add a deeper pan? How can I fix this?

 

It isn't that theres not enough fluid in the pan , Its that only so much volume can travel through a given space at a time. The only fix might be to lower you 2-3 shift point just a little
