Default lock up at wot

I was looking at Circle Ds website and i saw they has a stage 3 billet converter that was rated for lockup at full throttle. Why does this help? Less slipping means more horsepower at the wheels?

When do people usually make these converters lock up mph wise, or how do you determine where to have them lock up under wot.

Any input on this would be cool.

You are correct, when you lock the converter you eliminate any converter inefficiencies. But it will also drop the engine rpm and might bring you out of the power band. So it might actually slow you down. The clutch is controlled by a solenoid in the transmission which is controlled by the computer, so everything is done through tuning.

have you guys done any testing? I know with 3.23s and my fuddle 4000 i lose like 10 mph in 3rd gear. 4th gear is useless, so that extra 10 mph could be beneficial if i could stay in 3rd longer.

Yes, we have done some testing. While every setup is a little different, a NA car with less then 500HP typically shows no gains. Depends on gearing and the torque curve. You have a nice shot of nitrous, so you might net some gains.

With those gears you would not see a gain in the 1/4 mile. But if you had 3.73 or deeper and you noted when your rpms were past 6,300(usually at or past the 1/4) then locked the converter it would allow for more use in 3rd gear. More useful in highway pulls.

!!!!BUT make sure you never shift from gear to gear in lockup!!!! it is similar to taking a sledgehammer to internals of your tranny.

I thought about using lockup a lot but decided not to because it is hard on the converter clutch, and i don't do much roll races anyway. I gained a lot of top end from raising my 3rd gear limiter and shift point to 6,500, ls6 heads $400, 224 cam, and a lot of weight reduction. Car now weighs 3150 with full interior.
