Default No Reverse or Nuetral

I bought a 98 Z28 from a Friend. Who said that he let some one test drive the car and they broke the trans. He said that the person went in to reverse while driving forward... I guess trying to shift manualy.. Any way, when you put the car in to either R or N it still drives forward as if in Drive??? Any Ideas on what I could ckeck befor it gose to the trans shop??? The car drives forward fine shifting correctly. Any help would be great.

I would check the external in internal linkage in the pan first . But likely the forward clutch is seized and you are in need of a transmission

If it still drives fine my guess would be the trans cable popped off. Ask him if the shifter feals like it's loose or if it feals like it isn't connected to anything. Look under the car on the driver's side and see if the trans cable has come off. The one in my 95 used to do that all the time. I put a zip tie on it about 6 months ago and it hasn't come off since.
