Default 01 Formula Trans Issue FRUSTRATED!

Hi All,

NooB Firbird owner here, but not necessarily NooB in General Maintenance..but transmissions I am at a loss so I am asking For ur feedback. BTW I did searches and read other similar threads. I just bought this baby yesterday and the dealer told me they had the trans rebuilt due to some slipping issues. I contacted the rebuild place and they will take a look..but I always like other opinions and expert advice.

Here is the prob:

2001 Firebird Formula 84800 miles

When COLD: Goes into reverse no worries. In Drive, engine revs, slips then catches, speedo is jumping up and down at the time while rpm's stay constant.

When warmed up, seems to go and shift ok, but a little hard shifting from 3-4.
I slow down, then take off, it acts like it cannot shift and the speedo is going up and down. Basically doing the same thing as it would as cold. Slipping and not getting into gear.

Funny thing, I went on a 30-40 minute test drive before I bought it and it seemed to be just fine in all driving situations and then drove it 50 miles back to the house, again no issues..EXCEPT a high pitched whine noise that seems to be located center of car/rear of car between 55-70 and ONLY when I engage the accelerator.. when I let it coast at 55-60+ the "whine" is not there. My limited knowledge goes to u-joint/pinion gear or other rear end for that "whine"..

Like I said, the rebuilt tranny is under warrenty and I am taking it back to them. They did say though that they had to d some new wiring to the PCM..I groaned..maybe a new ECU or can u get the PCM seperate? I am going to ask they do a code scan and also ask if they flushed the cooler properly.

Thanks for reading and offering your .02!

The speedo jumping is likely your issue the PCM requires a VSS signal to operate the trans properly
