Default 700r4 ???

ok guys my brother just screwed his tranny in his 87 firebird with tpi and i have a 85 z28 with a 700r4 and was needing to know if i could just put the one out of mine in his car or will i have to mod something ......???

To answer the only question you asked.

Yes, it will swap over. No other problems.

Check the speedometer output on the pontiac. I think they may have switched to electric speedo outputs in 87. If so, you can switch they parts to the good tranny.

Does the 87 trans have a nickel sized dimple in the pan? If so it's got the later valvebody, and a slightly different wiring harness for the TCC solenoid. Everything else should work, but lockup might not. What engine in the 85? Depending upon options, your gear ratios are probably different. You will need to swap the speedo driven gears, and possibly the drive gear as well.

They have electric speedos. Good point, ulthough you missed it and I forgot, if gear ratios are different the governor might make it shift at different times. You probably won't even notice unless one has 2.43 gears and one has 4.56's

Theres nothing about the VB, the '87 has an auxillary vb thats basically a forward accumulator. That won't be noticed either.

If it doesn't lock up, rewire it while you're in there changing the filter.
