Please help....shifter problems?

Please help....shifter problems? im having a hard time pushing the botton down on the shifter to put it into gear (4l60e).....is there two seperate cables? one from the shifter to something and something to the trans? could it be the shifter? do i need a new shifter/ cable or lube something? please help
