Default Does a RMVB need a Reverse shifter?

So, this may be a dumb question... but if I am running a Th400 with a reverse manual valve body... and I am going to buy a Hurst Quarter Stick or a B&m Pro Stick... what will be the difference if I buy one with for a "forward pattern" versus a "reverse pattern"? Does it literally reverse where P R N 1 2 3 are? So all the way forward would be 3rd, then pulling back would be 2nd, then 1st, etc?

Or do can I just run a regular forward pattern shifter and pull back to go up in gear?

Thanks everyone in advance.

If it's a ratchet shifter then no. The only difference is the plate that indicates gear position. Forward would read PRND21, reverse would read PRN123

You'd want reverse pattern, yeah. Or a universal that will work with a reverse pattern

I use one of the reverse pattern B&M ratchet shifters for my RMVB th350. Sits in N first (I don't use the park or reverse on the shifter, I just use N + e-brake for park and N + tbrake for reverse), pull it down once for 1st, again for 2nd, one more time for 3rd

A Quarter Stick or Pro Stick isnt technically a Ratchet shifter. I understand how a ratchet is universal... click click up or click click down. I am curious about the one I linked above. Sounds like for a gated shifter (Quarter Stick) I do want a reverse pattern... but I am still wondering what the difference is. The gate must be different?

I think I found my answer. In the B&M Manual, page 7.

http://www.bmracing.com/bmracing/ins...ruction/21.pdf

It explains the difference in the two and how they will shift differently.
