Default 700r4 to LS1

Hey guys and gals. I'm new here and hoping to tap some of the knowledge floating around. As I stated in my intro, I'm in the middle of swapping in a 97 LS1 motor from a Vette into my 1995 Jeep Wrangler. I've selected a 700r4 out of an 88 Suburban. It's already been rebuilt, although I need to find a kick down cable and install it.

Anyway, sorry for the newb question, but I'm learning so please bare with me. Will this 700r4 mate directly to the LS1 despite the age difference? I know the LS1 was semi redesigned and is slightly different from traditional 350 SBC's. But I've seen adapters out there advertising mating the two together and this raised an eyebrow. I know the LS has been mated to the 4L60E which is virtually the same trans, but I'm trying to cover my bases. Second, are there any known issues with mating these two together? Thanks for the input.

Scott

The 700r4 won't bolt to an LS1 without an adapter plate.

Thanks for the replies. I'll check out those links. What if I just went out and got a 4L60E (4x4)? That would definitely bolt up right? Then I wouldn't have to worry about deleting the transmission from the PCM.

That would be the better choice IHMO. You would also need a Harness and PCM from a A4 F body, Or add the A4 wires to the Vette Harness.

You might still need a special adapter to hook to the jeep transfer case from advance adapters

As far as the TC, I'm going to have one custom built through Atlas. Then I won't have to d!ck around with adapters and plates. When I started this out, I was looking at just adapting in a 350 sbc. As I did more research, it would cost less and I would have a stronger trans by just getting a 700 or 4l60e. I ended up with the trans first, then stumbled upon the LS1. Now I'm rethinking a bit as far as 700 vs. 4l60e as far as compatibility. The other major concern was overall drive train length. I'm trying to keep that to a minimum due to the lift and the resulting drive shaft angles.
