Rebuilding my A4 myself...Hints?Tips?
Ok you trans guru's out there. I am going to take a stab at rebuilding my trans myself.
Any special tools I need first off?
Supposivley the tranny I have now was "mildly" built. Well, I lost all forward gears and only have reverse, so something BRoke inside.
Now, what parts will I need to "beef" for the extra power? Say H/C w/ 150shot extra power.
Do I need a hardened input shaft? Drum? 5 pinion planetary?
Also what clutches? Borg Warner? Alto? How about those Raybestos Special Blue plates?
I do belive it already has a beast sunshell. Also should I get the billet servos? Piston kits? Special Springs?
Like I said just need to hold a H/C 150shot engine...so say 550ish rwhp??
I'll start at the rear and work up.
GM 5 pinion reaction carrier (rear planet)
B/W lo roller clutch
Sonnax wide bushing for the reaction sun gear (rear)
Beast sun shell
02-up reaction carrier shaft for bearing
Gm 5 pinion input carrier assembly (front planet)
B/W 29 element dual cage sprag <----this piece needs all the holding power and strength you can get.
Sleeved input drum w/ modified overrun piston
Transgo hi rev springs <---these things are tough
New reverse input drum
Alto wide carbon band
Kolene steels throughout
Alto Reds for everything except 3/4 clutches
B/W High Energy for the 3/4 8 stack
All new seals, bushings and bearings
Torlon check *****
Sonnax pinless accumulators
Transgo shift kit and separator plate <--mine had a check ball punched through it.
new 3rd accumulator capsule in case
New 10 vane pump rotor and slide.
removed tcc check ball
Check anything your going to reuse very carefully. I had a cracked forward piston. Don't let anybody try to sell you a "7" 3/4 apply ring so you can fit more clutches as you should already have it. I'm not going with billet servos because with the shift kit and corvette servo it should have plenty of holding power. I don't plan on doing any wot shifts to 4th so I don't need that one either but you may. The 4th servo would be the only one I would get.
You'll need
Trans Gel <----this stuff lasts forever, on my 3rd transmission (all different ones) and barely used 1/4 of the tub.
a press <--makes life easier
snap ring pliers internal and retaining ring
slide hammer
special spring compressors
bushing drivers <----and no the vatozone set won't work
seal protectors for the forward and overrun
pump half alignment tool
alignment pins for the pump and valvebody <--- I made mine from old bolts with the heads cut off and rounded over.
teflon seal installer an sizer for the input shaft and stator
You'll only need about 3 or 4 sockets
If I think of something else I'll add it.....oh and a Pry bar helps.
Just remember aluminum is a soft metal and the machined surfaces can be damaged and cleanliness cleanliness cleanliness.
I put 2 holes in my work bench, one for the outputshaft to slide through and one for the input drum during assembly.
If you get stuck at a certain part, just ask. Those of us that have been there will chime in.
Good build there. Similar to mine, but I kept the 4 pinion planets and used the red eagle 3/4 clutches. I have a 13 vane pump with the hardened vane rings and billet servos.
I've made over 150 1/4 mile passes and put about 14k miles in 3 years without any problems.
