Ok yesterday driving home i noticed that it wont go into 3rd or 4th gear at all it just free revs when it tries to shift into third. first and second are fine is just when going into third or 4th the rpms shoot up like in neutral. Unfortunatley you have lost the 3-4 clutch set and the trans will need to be rebuilt or replaced .

Pretty much just normal wear and tear, since 3rd and 4th are essentially the same clutches. ive went through 2: 3-4 clutch sets.

is it common for some hole in the wall shop not replace 3-4 clutch set when it is being rebuilt. The reason i ask is because before i owned the car the trans had already been rebuilt by some shop and supposedly they replaced all the clutches but dont know about that cause they left a hole bunch of crap loose under the car

It would be replaced but not upgraded normally with a regular rebuild in a regular shop.

ive always heard of people saying that the stock 4l60e trans that came with the f-bodys were crap until they were upgraded internally. Is this true or a bunch of crap?

i had the same problem. my 3-4 clutch packs were toast. you can get a pretty good deal on a rebuilt unit for about $1k, especially in Texas there should be quite a couple.
