3rd and 4th gears not working properly

3rd and 4th gears not working properly While driving down the highway today I lost fourth gear; it would just free rev. I dropped it down to third but nope, nothing there either. So I put it in second and drove home at a high RPM (this shouldn't hurt anything, right?). First and second seem to work normally but when it tries to shift to third it just revs and won't catch. The fluid is full but smells kinda like an ashtry. I'm assuming that's not a good sign. 
If I get it up to highway speed in second and then shift to third and take my foot off the gas, the revs will come down to what they would be in third gear at that speed. If I shift into overdrive they drop again accordingly. There is engine resistance (more in third obviously), it's not as though it just goes into nuetral. But if I give it gas in either third or fourth, it just slips. I have to drop it to second to get it to pull at all. Any ideas about what I'm dealing with here?

Sounds like a 3-4 clutch failure. Unfortunately you need a new transmission or need to have your trans rebuilt. Feel free to give us a call if there is something we can do for you. Vince
I would agree with Vince on this you have a 3-4 clutch failure and its time for a transmission upgrade.
