Well yes. A built transmission that doesn't fit isn't of much use.

Fitting the 98 versus any other year LS1 is the same. GM modified the bolt pattern by 1 bolt from old chevy to LS1 and newer Chevy...they did it because they wanted to make the engine shorter. Part of this included pulling the bellhousing flange in towards the pistons, and the upper right bolt as a result would have stuck into the #8 cylinder, so they relocated that 1 bolt but left the other 5 the same...so a trans that came on an older chevy will bolt right on, short of 1 bolt, and vice versa, new trans works on older chevy less 1 bolt...there might be some issues with flywheels/flexplates and crank bolt patterns and crank flange locations...but they're all solvable issues.
