Default Getting ready for 4L80E swap

I picked up my 4L80E transmission late yesterday,it's a BTE street-strip version with a 3500 stall lockup converter.I thought these transmissions were supposed to be really big and heavy, mine measured 31.75" long and scaled at 185 lbs.The builder was really excited about the way the transmission"banged every shift including 4th on the dyno" he said"this tranny really rocks"so now i'm excited.I'm running the electronics with a TCI computer and I'm thinking 4.56 or 4.88 gears using 4th gear in the 1/4mi. The converter looks odd using a full size lockup with a small top half.I'll probably start my install monday.

Let us know how it works out. Thanks for the weight of the 4L80E. Did you happen to weigh the 4L60E? Was this with or without the convertor?

I'd like to know the weight differences of those 2 trannies, without the convertor.

Is there a transbrake available for the 80 yet?

That 185 lb weight is without the converter. The converter weighed 47 lbs a stock 4L80E converter weighs about 65 lbs.The transmission mount on the 4L80E is about 6.7"further back than the 4L60E so I've cut the hump out my crossmember and wielded steelplate on the backside to locate the rear mount.

I paid $1673 for a street-strip version from BTE,I think you can get a full manual version with Transbrake. You need a crank spacer and a 6.0HD flywheel to make everything bolt up.You can reprogram a stock PCM to work, but I'm using a TCI stand alone computer. The transmssion is close to the same length as a 4L60E,but the mount on the 4L80E is about 6.77" further back so the crossmember has to be modified.I'm hoping to use the stock driveshaft by changing to a TH400 yoke.I'll try to post some picture as I progress.I'll probably need to change the rear gear ratio because of the taller 1st and 2nd gear ratios[2.48 and 1.48]with the lower geared rear I hoping it'll work like a close ratio box with a usable .75 4th gear capable of with standing a WOT shift into 4th.

I was able to use my stock drive shaft for my conversion. I love the setup - have ahd it for 4-5 months now. There are no trans-brakes available at this point unless you know some gm R&D guys - have fun -Randy

trans-go makes a manual valve body- which I have- but no one makes a transbrake for the public
