Yesterday I was talking to a hole in the wall tranny shop. They only do 4l60's and 700r4's. I couldn't tell if they really knew their **** or were really good at BS'ing, so .. on with the questions.
Does the 4l60 only run coolant when the verter is locked? They were telling me that there is a selenoid in the pump that only opens when the verter locks to allow coolant up to the radiator/cooler. Is this true or a line of crap. I found this one hard to swallow myself.
There were a couple of other things, but I can't remember off hand what they said. I do remember them saying that they had one of those super Raptor tranny's come in that had already been taken back to the original builder 3 or 4 times that they fixed 1st time. He also said that they had parts in it that he didn't even know how to get a hold of. That kinda made me wonder too.

What do ya'll think?

He also told me that the TCC doesn't fully lock, it will only lock at 20% slippage. I thought there was unlocked, then something like an almost lock, then it locks. Can someone guide me on that one too?
Coolant(the same stuff that circulates through the engine) does not flow through the transmission at all. The transmission oil flows through the radiator at all times though. I saw this with my own eyes as my transmission was flushed. They opened the line on the in side of the radiator to connect the machine. This occured at idle in every gear when the converter would obviously not be locked.
My opinion is if the trans guy you're talking to doesn't know how to get the Hi-Performance style parts(upgraded clutches, servo's etc.) in a built tranny he will not be able to build you a hi performance tranny.
As far as the converter locking from what I know (which isn't everything at this point) is the lock-up converter directly couples the engine to the transmission when locked. There will either be very little or no slippage when this happens. As I am no expert on this subject I think you should wait for someone like the Colonel to chime in on the converter issue..

Engine "coolant", as in anti-freeze, NEVER circulates to the trans. There are lines that go to the radiator, and inside the radiator there is a seperate, self contained transmission cooler. Antifreeze and ATF must NEVER mix, the result would be an instantly fried trans.
ATF circulates through those lines at all times. Like lerajie mentioned, that's how transmission flushes are performed (I should know, I do them every day). On some Chrysler transmissions, mostly older ones, fluid would only pump in gear or neutral, not in park. That's why the old Dodge Diplomat cop cars went through transmissions left and right. Parts still turn all the time, but they would sit for long periods in park with the engine running, and the hard parts would get no oil. But I digress...
The TC clutch should have SOME slippage, yes. But 20% slippage is WAY too much.
Its pretty obvious that this shop basicly SUCKS, another case in point for the 70% builder, 20% parts, 10% luck situation. I wouldn't let them do a filter change if I were you.
As far as Raptor, they make/sell some awsome parts but I've never dealt with one of their complete units. It's quite possible that PATC (Raptor) may have screwed one up and the problem went overlooked, and they just happend to catch it. Even a stopped clock is right once in a while right?
Good luck

When I said coolant, I was referring to ATF running to the radiator/cooler, not actually coolant. I'm sorry, I should have been more clear on that.
The shop seemed to know a lot about how the transmission worked. I was told by the guy that they don't do performance applications very much at all, but are more a stock shop. I think the guy I was talking to used to be a tranny tech at a dealership.
He wasn't the one telling there was slippage in the TCC, and I'm not sure he was the one telling me that there was no ATF flow except for when the TCC is locked.
I think though .. I have decided to not use them. Does anyone have any recommendations for East TX, more particularly the Marshall/Tyler/Longview area?
