auto shifters

hi guys ,can someone explained to me what does the term mean
foward pattern & revers pattern action on a shifter
iam new to auto so dont shoot me down

forward means the shifter pulled all the way back will be 1st and you push forward to go into 2, 3, and so on. Reverse pattern is when you start at the top and pull back 1 2 3 and so on
