Default caution! 1-2 in th350

Hey... I am learning a lot about auto transmissions so I am going to keep asking questions...

Todays question is about the 1,2 shift on a TH350. I was told that no matter how well the trans was built, you did not want to shift to second with the wheels spinning?? Is this in the burn-out box? I never had an issue with a TH400 or even a 4l60e under quite a deal of power break in these type of conditions. I have a trans builder friend of mine that has a TH350 in a 9:90 class bracket Nova. Wheels up guy. He said the guy has a lot of passes on the trans and only brakes stuff when he changes his launch or burnout rountin. Any thoughts? P.S. he never breaks the shafts or burns the clutches.

First I've ever heard of anything like that. I always go first to second in the burnout box and haven't had an issue with my TH350

I had an old Chevy Nova with a built TH350, shift kit, 2800-3200 stall...Putting down around 450 to the wheels, and I never had a problem with it shifting 1-2 while the tires were spinning... Actually....it wouldn't shift in mine at all unless you let off the gas....it was set up all crazy like lol.. But at WOT it would NEVER shift at any speed which I kind of liked because then it was like I was driving a manual... Given, hearing my engine rev to 7500+ RPMS was sometimes scary and probably the demise of the engine, but the transmission never once had any problems... This probably doesn't help though.

It is hard on the sprag. Run 1rst up just to get the tires, (slicks), loose and shift into 2nd and get the slicks or tires warm.

You should always finish your burnout in 3rd.

I think it is harder on the sprag in a TH350 if you come out of the burnout box in second and let off the gas right when the tires start grabbing. I ease off mine and have never had an issue with it. We need to contact Mythbusters!

Its very hard on the sprag. You should start your burnout in 2nd, and quickly go to 3rd, then rollout of the burnout box. Or if you have a bunch of power just start in 3rd.
