D79

I have a 79 firebird that I just put a SBC and a chevy th350. I hooked up the linkage last night and pulled it through the gears and D-2-1 all feel great. P-R-N all feel like there is pressure pushing the selector backwards towards the rear of the car. I looked under the car and it engages every gear and I have the cable running above the k-member. Should the cable run below the transmission k-member? Any advice?
