Hello, new to the forum. Just have a quick question about my car. I have a 2001 Camaro Z28 with the 4 speed automatic. What type of transmission is in it? I think I remember seeing something like 4l60 as the tranny my car should have. If so, I believe they also used that transmission in the 2004-2007 Monte Carlos. I only ask because I know the 2006-2007 Monte Carlo SS pushed out 303HP and that was the 4l60's max, and because of this there were a lot of transmission failures. I just hope I won't have the same problem with this car.

06-07 monte carlo is FWD no RWD so they do not use the same transmission as the f body's

i believe the monte carlo is based on the grandprix, and i blew up 3 of those tranny's in my GTP

 

Monte's had the 4T65E. Its pretty easy to understand the GM naming code, 4 = 4 gears, T = transverse mounted (or L = Longitudinally mounted in our case) 65 is the weight rating, E is electronic.

To answer your original question, its hit or miss with 4L60E's. I'm pretty sure it wasn't designed with 300+ hp in mind originally, and most people end up having to have it rebuilt even when their car is stock. Some have them last a long time, others (like me) go through several in just a few years. If you plan on serious mods, I would look at getting a built transmission, lots of good sponsors on here that can get you a bulletproof one made.
