Trans pulls but something clanking inside???

Trans pulls but something clanking inside??? less than 10,000 miles ago i put a mild built 4l60e with a 2800-3200 stall in my 98 Trans Am. i was cruisin it down the road last night and it just starts sounding like something is inside slingin around so i take it to a buddys shop and check the fluid and its a dark color. and the front pump is whining. 
anyone have any ideas on what broke? im pullin the pan off tonight to see what we can find out. thanks for all the help.
