starting off in 2nd
at the track if i do a burnout for about more than 3 secs and pull to the line my car starts off in 2nd gear but if i just role thru the water box and just kind of spin the water of and role thru it starts in the right gear. so my question is what causes this? and its a 4l60 and is built but not by a well known builder lol!

Have you tried putting it in second to do the burn out the shift to drive just before staging? That is what I do. Just do not forget to shift out of second been there done that.

With the shifter in 2nd at a stop, it forces the trans to start off in 2nd gear rather than 3rd. My old V6 had a Second Gear Start button that would do the same thing. Never used it though.

if your shifter is put into 2nd some cars will launch in 2nd, mine is one
are you shifting during your burnout? if it's not that something is triggering safe mode so the car will hang in 2nd until the car is shut down for a minute or 2 and will most likely throw a code for a shift solenoid

im putting it in 2nd to start the burnout but it starts of in 1st and then shifts to 2nd during the burnout but if i say do it for more than 3 or 4 secs and pull out and put back into the normal d position it starts of in 2nd. it seems like what thunderstruck said something is making it go into safe mode bc if i take the battery cable of for a min its fine as long as i dont do 3 or 4 sec burnout. but there is no check engine light on when it does this either
