shifting from D to 2nd..how hard is it on the tranny?

why? the computer can shift faster than you can.

a buddy of mine does it all the time, so i was curious how bad it is. lol

it will kill the tranny within 100K

The tranny is made to stay in D, unless in high stress situations where you would not want to be in overdrive.

Forced downshifts are hard on any transmission.

A good rule of thumb IMHO is that a downshift should NEVER be initiated with the gear selector unless in an emergency such as when you need all the breaking power you can get, or if you're going down a huge hill.
