Default th350 sprag SNAP

Broke my intermediate sprag, bearing cage and roller everywhere, race snapped in two. Big suprise. What are ALL my options with this, i know most will say the 36 element but i feel like i would find a way to break this. At this point i'm craigslisting th400s lol.

If you are planning on staying with a spring and roller style one way clutch, I would recommend going with a hardened outer race and a new drum. These races are black in color and are supposed to be much stronger than the original oem ones. In most cases I use a sprag style one way clutch but then again that is definitely more money. Vince

Yea, the one i broke is black, was supposedly a built tranny that would hold 650 horses. I can see red clutches from pulling the pump to inspect the sprag. The race is black, assuming it was hardened. Broke in half at the oil channels.

Depending on how hard the second gear shift was or your driving habits might be what caused the failure. IMO a sprag drum is a good idea in a built th350 for racing. Vince

Reverse manual valvebody, the second gear shift is pretty harsh. Know i have let off in gear before but not to the point ever that the tires have bitten. Pretty sure i'm just gonna keep my eyes open for a th400. Doubt the engine makes 425-450 horses so a basic 400 with some valve body mods should do right?

A 400 should work fine however I have pushed a Th350 deep into the low 8's. I guess you have to do what is right for your budget and go from there. Good luck with whatever you choose to do. If there is anything we can do for you give us a call. Vince

Yea the problem i have with it is for the price of upgrading the th350 right, i could find a decent th400 that would more than likely suit me fine for a long while. And if it doesn't it will be easier/cheaper to fix. One question though. I've heard of adapting the mechanical diode from a 4r70 to a th350. I just so happened to have one laying around (who's wierd, this guy lol). It seems much tougher than the sprag stuff. Have you ever done this or know anyone that has?
