Use the Gunk that smells like kerosene and diesel, not the foam type or any other brand, or any brand that says to use on a warm engine. Make sure the directions say to use it on a cold engine since you're going to be using it on a cold part.
Spray it on and scrub it with whatever different sized brushes you need to get to all of it. It doesn't work well at all unless you scrub it. Keep spraying and scrubbing until you see it disolved, then spray it off with water. Once it's wet you cannot respray more degreaser, it won't work on a wet surface.
If it's a little dirty still or you want to get rid of the smell use some Castrol superclean or a similiar type non solvent based cleaner.

Oven cleaner works very well. I use that to clean some of my severly dirty cases beofre I drop them into my parts washer. cleans then up really nice let it sit for about 5 mins and then wash it off.
