a4's with 4.10's come on in

i am installing an a4 and i have 4.11's. Wanting some feedback on if you like them or would change to 3.73's or 3.42's. I will be racing frequently and it is a street car. Thanks for the input.

boostedLSX Jan 21, 2011 11:33 PM

I have an A4 with 4.11 gears and a 3400 stall. I really enjoy it. I dont do much highway driving. usually at 65-70 mph it was around 2300-2500 rpms. If you race it one problem you might run in to is it will shift into overdrive before you cross the finish line. Thats if your racing on the drag strip ofcoarse. When mine was a stock block with boltons it was fine. but when i installed heads, cam and intake it would shift into 4th gear before the end. I had to set my shift point at 6800 rpms so it would stay in 3rd gear.

i have a 3200 stall and 3.73 and its fine and seems to perform well for just a fun DD street toy. I plan on stepping up to a 4k stall and if i ever throw in a 12 bolt i might want to throw some 4.10.

I want to hear more also. I dont really drive my car much so MPG doesnt really matter to me.

If its a dd or you want any mileage you will want to go down to a 3.73

410s made me hate my old white car, that coupled with the exhaust.

The difference in 410 and 373s in an a4 are extremely extremely small when it comes to et and what not.. you will hate it at anything over 55mph.

Unless you see minimal stret time, as in a weekend race car or a track only car, I say hell no to 410s.

jgarza54 Jan 22, 2011 02:32 AM

I enjoy them but I have a dana and I'm on 28in tires.. At around 80 I'm right at 2850 to 2900 rpms.. When I had my 10 bolt, I had 3.90s and loved them.. If they made some for the dana I would have them on..

i used to run 4:10s with 26 inch tall drag radials and never had a problem, but then again i only ran the 1/8th mile so in your case if your running a 1/4 mile it might be different. I was also turning it to 6200 at that time i believe

I have a Z28 A4 with 4.10s in it and it is my dd. I love it! Go big or go home.

Go with the 3.73 and call it a day. That way you are not worried if you have to much gear going thru at the end of the track . Unless you want to run a 28" tire . I love my 3.73 with my set-up and will probably never change it. Great for DD and performs great at the strip . Best of both worlds.

4.11's with a 3800 vert and 28" tires and it's Awesome!! 70mph is definitely doable on the highway right at 2350-2375 rpm. I just picked this car up a few weeks ago and drove it back basically from Tulsa, Ok to and hour north of Champaign, Il. I even made a short detour to visit my mom for a day in Mo so the trip was over 650 miles and i avg'd 18 1/2 mpg with a 402 & a 9"! You will be fine with them running around 10.5 or slower 1/4 for a rough estimate through your auto on 28" tires.

badblazeSS Jan 22, 2011 08:25 AM

i don't really care about gas mileage. im running a 408 and 28" tire. I mainly run 1/8 mile but i will run 1/4 mile occasionally. I am also running through a 9". If anything i would switch to 3.90's. Thanks for all the input and keep it coming. I do plan to "go big or go home!"

4k stall with 4:10s here... gas mileage sucks, about 2500 rpms at 70. its really to that bad to drive around town with that big of a stall. If im stopped and let off the break the car starts to roll. When i get a 9" ill probably get 370s because i drive on the freeway alot..

4:11's here. They are fun but with the 4l60e, first gear is a waste on the street (can you say tire spin) It is hard to hook up at the track with out a full suspension. As posted above you might run out of gear on the top end. I don't but am pulling 6800-7000 at the finish on motor while locking the convertor in 3rd. If you spray the car you will most likley have to shift into over drive. I still do after I cross the line to take the strain off the motor.

The engine spins about 3900 rpm at 100mph in OD.

I love my 410's.. I turn just under 3000 in 4th doing 70mph w/o the tc locking up.. I went from 342's and a 6spd to 410's and a 4l80 with a transbrake, best thing I've done to the car thus far.

i like your style.

i will be spraying it...quite frequently but as i said before i do wanna run 1/4 mile sometimes. Is there a 29" tire that would work to get me through the 1/4 without gettin on the limiter?

boostedLSX Jan 22, 2011 05:19 PM

What rpm do you spin your motor to and do you have any idea what your trap speed will be in the 1/4?

badblazeSS Jan 22, 2011 06:41 PM

i spin it to about 6500 and it will be about 105-107mph in the 1/8th so im guessing 130-135 1/4 mile

You could go with a 28" et street vs a drag radial and take advantage of the growth on the top end.

boostedLSX Jan 22, 2011 11:59 PM

I think you might run out of gear at those speeds. I would say a 3.73 would be your best bet. I dont think you would have to go to a 3.42 though. When i raced mine I was on a 26 inch tire but I was spinning the motor to 6800rpms and it was only getting to about 122-124 mph.

4.56s' w/A4 here, put in in Sept.of 2007,used a spare rearend 10 bolt 3 channel assembly I had and put in a set of used Richmond 4.56s' I picked up at a swap meet for $25,an Eaton clutch posi I picked up at Summit in their 'bargain' corner for $300(was only missing center pin which I got for $15 from a rearend vendor at a swap meet),and misc. parts I had. Set it up and got 23,000 miles on it so far.
4.56s' with my stock tire diameter and stock rpm engine is too much gear for the 1/4 mile, requires shifting to 4th to finish the 1/4. Time improvement over the OEM 3.23s' was .31 in the 1/8 and .46 in the 1/4,most of the improvement showed up in the 1/8. The data difference was extracted from 12 runs,6 with the 3.23s' and 6 with the 4.56s' and at 2 tracks(tracks results were identical within .008 sec). Only change was gearing, nothing else.
The 4.56s' on the street are great,1st and 2nd are wicked. Cruising RPM is true 2500 at true 60 mph. So far have taken 4 trips with the 4.56s' from Cleveland,Ohio to Central Florida and the computor handles the mpg surprisingly well. At freeway legal speeds,6 trips with the 3.23s' gave me 24.5mpg,4 trips with the 4.56s' gave me 21.5mpg.
I'm planning on removing the 4.56 rearend and putting the OEM rearend back in,but I've gotta decide what gears to go with,I have all the sets and carriers(got 2.73s',3.08s',my OEM 3.23s',3.42s',3.73s',& 4.10s'). Strongly considering 3.42s' as I got a Yank SS3600 to go in too.
