Why shouldn't I get on it in OD?
Isn't 4th gear just a band that applies to 3rd? I always thought 3/D ONLY kept you out of 4th and tells the computer not to lockup the 'verter. Nothing else happens. It just doesn't allow those two things to take place.
For what it's worth, I use OD 75% of the time, and mat it everywhere. I'll only use 3/D when I'm in traffic doing speeds between 20 and 35, where the tranny is always bumping up and down gears.
i could be totally wrong though. i was told to run in OD.
I can tell you for sure, my tailshaft housing broke in 3 on the dyno unlocked. not sure if thats because the car and dyno drums were fighting each other, but it was extra $$ to fix.
Shifting from OD to D or D to OD is fine, IMO. And I've never managed to kill a tranny when slamming it WOT when in OD either. It's one of those things that *seems* like it's hard on the tranny....but who's toasted one by doing so?

So I guess we really aren't helping anything by running it in 3rd for WOT. I guess I'll just stick to OD then, unless someone has some hard facts that 3rd really is better for the trans.

I think the only issue with using OD is if you actually shift into OD going WOT. With my current tuning, I wouldn't hit OD at WOT until 132mph anyway, so I'm not really concerned about that

I don't think there is any reason to use 3rd from a stop for racing.
I don't think there is any reason to manually downshift to 3rd (from OD) before going WOT from a roll either.
Can anyone dispute that with hard facts? If so lets here it, cause I'd really like to know once and for all.
my car has automatic overdrive...when im going form a stop...it goes through the gears......overdrive kicks in with the torque converter...so when im driving normally....it stalls at 1800-1900 and thats the overdrive....overdrive is your 4th gear from what i understand....better fuel economy thats all...cuz it runs lower RPM's...basically what cruise control does for your car...runs a good speed at lower RPM's thats OD...when you have your car in D and punch it it goes 1-2-3-4...
if your pacing at 30-35 or so...your overdrive will be kicked in...witht he stock TC...so its oin 3rd or 4the electronically....if you punch it our stock transmission downshifts automatically for better response so it drops too 2nd...like if your rolling at 25 o so yo can be in 3rd gear...you punch it and the trans will shift into 1st gear with the stock converter...
basically this....leave it in D if you have automatic OD....and also if your gonna race.......if you have OD and D...for racing use D (it has quicker acceleration) and if your just cruising or goin on the highway use OD...if they both show on the shifter.....
shifting from D(automatic OD)-3 is ok...may hammer a lil on the tran but not to bad.as long as your not over about 85...if your in OD if thats what your shifter has....i believe it goes...1-2-D-OD...dooooo noooooooooooot down shift....OD slows down more quickly then D does for some reason....mayb bcuz of the rpms it runs at whoooooo knos..
hopefully that helps and is understandable

I really don't think there are any hard facts to prove that "D" (3rd) is any better for power or easier on the trans than "OD" (4th). Again, if there is I'm sure we'd all like to see it.
