ok, i have 98 camero ls1. it has 373 gears. i bought the car completely stock besides the gear. It shifted late( about 1000 rpms too high) before changing gears, and shifted fairly firm. Full throttle shifts would often hit the rev limiter from 1-2, and 2-3 would sometimes feel faded. i assumed that it needed to be programmed because of the gear, as the speedo was way off also. i ordered a used hypertech. i have adjusted the shift points up and down. no change. it still shifts late when cruising, and hits the rev limiter on occasion, and feels faded between 2-3. none of this is do to wheel spin by the way. i have tried numerous adjustments on shift points, rev limiter, and shift firmness. no results, still a poor shifting, jerky ride that feels like trans may be going. it does have a 103k, so tell me it aint so:-(

From your description, the transmission is on its way out. Drive it easy, and DO NOT let it rev up between shifts, get out of the throttle immediately, if you want it to live for awhile.
