3rd Gear TCC lockup and TCC Lock
This is regarding part throttle shifting, TCC lock points, and the TCC Lock setting for a 2001 Formula. It has a 278mm Circle D stall and the transmission has been rebuilt by Circle D and PWM is gone.
The stock TCC apply speeds in 3rd gear are basically at or slightly above the 3-4 shift so that the car doesn't lock the stall in 3rd unless you have the shifter in 3rd. Otherwise it just shifts to 4th and then at some point in 4th lockup occurs. I know that some people eliminate any lockup in 3rd gear whatsoever, but I don't think if you have a decent clutch that this is going to be a problem.
At any rate from the other thread Pat G had this idea years ago but I am not sure how it panned out. He wanted to lock the torque converter in 2nd, 3rd and 4th at low throttle to tighten everything up around town. To do that you would need to command the shift lock feature to keep the torque converter clutch applied in between shifts. I am not sure how that panned out because I didn't see anything about the success or failure.
I personally don't care to lock up the car in 2nd, but I have been thinking about perhaps locking it in 3rd and using shift lock so that the shift into 4th keeps the converter locked. This would help give it a little tighter feeling around town.
My question is has anyone tried this, or is anyone else running the transmission like this? Has it worked well or not? Is there a compelling reason not to do this? Is shifting with it locked going to kill the clutch?
Haven't actually programmed the car to do this yet, which is why I am asking.
Thanks.
It's sort of moot anyway because it looks like that option is just an extra one and doesn't do anything for our cars.
Eh screwing up the converter's clutch was why I was hesitant to try this even if we had this functionality.
