Default Driveline free-play 'clunk' - greasing the slip-yoke.

I'm getting a bad 'clunk' when going to reverse or drive. The vehicle has 9,000 miles on it.

I've been told it's the slip-yoke sticking on the output shaft of the tranny. Supposedly the ATF doesn't reach this area well enough to keep the slip-yoke sticktion free. The fix is to drop the driveshaft, and get some grease on the splines of the slip-yoke. I'm not completely comfortable with introducing grease to the inside of my tranny. Or in my case, the transfer case.

I always thought it was the gear lash or free play in the GM 10-bolts that made this noise.

What are your thoughts on this?

I'm not sure if trucks had the same issues as f-bodies, but A4's with 3.23 gears and aluminium driveshafts were known to have the same clunk. Worked fine any other time.

put a short piece of 3/4 or 5/8 heater hose about 2 inches long in the slop yoke. Where I work at that is what we do
