Default How much power can it take

How much HP and how much torque can the stock transmission in the 02 WS.6 withstand...my frend said his LT1 putting out around 400 rwhp and 373 lbs of tq is too much for his trans...and he gonnan haveta def.swap it when he does the LT4 conversion so i was wondering what the stock trans is...
i dont think the gear ratio effects it but yeah anyone got an idea or kno for a fact

the stock tranny will blow up pretty quickly after anything more than bolt-ons are done...i grenaded a trans with JUST bolt ons...they're good for stock power but anything more and they're pretty much living on borrowed time. 400 RWHP is definitely enough to kill the trans after a pretty short time.

i had everything in my sig....the 4L65E is a little stronger (like it would probably stand up to a cammed motor) but its not worth the money unless you can get it for dealer cost (i knew someone at a pontiac dealer).

Rossler is about the best 4L60 there is but im talking top dollar stuff now...FLP is supposed to be real good too.

tough question, my trans took 340 rwhp 350 rwtq for about 50 passes before it gave up...keep in mind though almost every one of those passes was a DEAD HOOK. lots of strain on the drivetrain. with a stock converter and a street tire, the trans will live for a long time because the only thing you'll be breaking is traction.

what do u intend to do with the car???? if you're gonna cruise it around the street on a regular radial and you're not doing a torque converter the LS6 stuff you were mentioning would probably take awhile to kill it... on the other hand if you want to bolt on heads and cam and make 370+ RWHP and then go to the track on a slick with a 4000 stall or something, the stock tranny isnt gonna live long at all...

Mine is a stock tranny with a extra deep tranny pan. I have a tranny cooler and a Trans Go shift kit set to the firmest setting. I also have a TCI 4400 stall converter. I had the line pressure ramp up with the rpm's through tuning. I will be going into my 3rd season on it running 11's and it show no signs of fatigue, and also I am pushing well over 450 rwhp... I don't expect it to last forever. When it doesn fail, I will be putting in a Rossler... JFM has run a ton of low 11 passes as well on his stocker and had no problems.

IMHO,the 4L60E is not as weak as some may think. If you service it propperly and stay away from manually shifting it,it will be happy for quite a long time.
Mine has not given me any troubles in 77xxx miles and i run the auto x course/drag race w/slicks and drive the car like the sports car it is in general.
With the last 40xxx miles of its life having a Vig3600 stall(NO cooler) and spraying a 150RWHP shot of juice to it at the track dead hooking a 1.5 60ft for over the last year.
Yeah it wont last forever, but it is not as weak as some seem to think.
Mine is getting gone through next week(but) only because of a convertor swap(Well and it is also a good idea to freshen it up after 77xxx miles of racing).
Basically be good to it and it will be good to you. Stay away from super long smokey powerbraking and NO manual shifting, watch the fluid and sevice the filter regularly.
For what its worth. I dyno'd stock 289.9/297.7 then added Headers/custom Y-pipe/Borla/lid/GMAS/Predator/160t-sta/Convertor/Nitrous/Ngk plugs and MSD wires. No idea what i would Dyno today for sure, but around 450/500 HP/TQ.

so it can take probably a good 100 extra hp to the rear wheels b4 it would need an upgrade...or is it more like 50-75?

or hell even more then 100....

say would it be able to andle very near to 500 or say...how bout boosting your car at 6-12 psi?....spraying at 150 shots....?new heads cams....what is the most this can take and keep a long life.....

i was thinking bout dropping in an LS6 motor....or figuring a way to keep it legal....with mass power gains...(i.e. headers, catted x-pipe, true duals, ram air, port and polish the heads and throttle body) ....and want to kno if the trans can take it

its hit or miss really. some guys go high 10s on the stock tranny....some (like myself) blow it up with stock internals. you can never really know.
