Default Do I need a rebuild?

Recently my 4l60e started grinding when I would put it into gear (from p to r or d), but it shifts fine in all gears. The grinding is coming from the tail of the trans. I have changed the u joint going into rear and trans mount and it continued to do the same thing and now vibrates from about 45mph+. The previous owner told me the tranny was rebuilt about 40k ago just to give a rough estimate. Is there something i can do or does it have to be rebuilt? Thanks.

MINE HAS DONE THE SAME THING SINCE I BOUGHT THE CAR. I HAVE HAD MECHANICS LOOK AT IT AND THEYSAID NOT TO WORRY. MINE HAS BEEN THAT WAY FOR 20K MILES. IT SEEMS TO DO IT MORE WHEN THE WEIGHT OF THE CAR IS ON THE TRANS MOUNT TORQUE ARM. NOT SAYING ITS PERFECT HOWEVER, MINE HAS BEEN FINE THIS LONG. HOPE THIS HELPS SOMEHWAT OR AT LEAST EASES YOUR MIND .

Are you hearing the grinding noise sitting still or while moving? The only part that would make sense to me that would cause this would be the rear planetary also referred to as the reaction carrier or the ring gear for this carrier.

the noise is coming while im sitting still. Some times it seems worse than others, but its not really effecting anything with how it drives, I just want to know what the possible cause is.

If the noise is happening sitting still in gear with the brake applied its not a trans issue as nothing is moving in the trans

Ok. It's kind of hard to describe but it sounds like its coming from the back of the trans when I'm at a dead stop shifting from p-d or r-d and it grinds then jerks the car forward a little bit harshly

Sounds like a torque converter in my opinion. Is the stall speed about what the rating spec is? See if dragging the service brakes makes the vibration stop above 45mph.

On the vibration...make sure the u-joint is centered in the yoke and the new trans mount locates the tailshaft in the same place as the last one. Was there any wear on the slip yoke when you replaced the u-joint?

Yes the stall speed seems the same. The mount I used was from autozone but it looked different from the one that came off the tranny originally so idk if that would make a huge difference or not. I'll try the brake thing next time in on the highway and see if that stops the vibration
