Default O.K., now what?

It has been determined that my transmission is slipping. 2 to 3 seems to be shot at WOT. What are my options? Do I put together performance upgrade parts and have my local tranny guy rebuild the thing or do I buy a ready made one from a vendor?

What should a upgraded, rebuilt transmission run me? How about the cost of installation? Would an upgrade in the torque converter be wise for an otherwise stock engine in a daily use car? In the future I would like to get a head/cam/intake/headers combo for about 400-425 rwh.

Also, is it common for a car with only 35k on the odometer to blow a transmission? The only mods I have are listed in my signature.

Aloha,

if you decide to rebuild your stock unit, do some research and make srue you pick a builder that has some experience with these transmissions specifically. A friend of mine had a nationally recognized tranny chain (ill give you a hint....its starts with two As) rebuild his tranny and it blew up less than 300 miles in on 3 different occasions...it just goes to show ya, a lot of tranny guys are used to building transaxles for 120 hp hondas all day so they may not be the best bet to rely on when bolting their work to a 340+ hp LS1. once you've found a reputable builder, make sure to upgrade the following...

-clutch packs (hi-energy or even alto red clutches should work well.)
-sunshell (cant stress this enough...they break regularly. get a "beast" replacement shell...im sure there's info on where to get one on here somewhere.)
-hi energy or kevlar 2-4 band

most "built" trannies also include better servos, hardened shafts and drums, deep pans, shift kits and such as well.

you may want to add a shift kit for more precise shiftng and definitely look into a tranny cooler. this second one is ESSENTIAL if you go with an aftermarket torque converter (which, by the way, is a GREAT mod with excellent performance gains.) ask anyone else on here with a high stall and im sure they'll agree its some of the best money they ever spent on their car.

if you want to get another unit from a vendor, try FLP. i hear good things about them. good luck!
