O.K., now what?
What are my options? Do I put together performance upgrade parts and have my local tranny guy rebuild the thing or do I buy a ready made one from a vendor? What should a upgraded, rebuilt transmission run me? How about the cost of installation? Would an upgrade in the torque converter be wise for an otherwise stock engine in a daily use car? In the future I would like to get a head/cam/intake/headers combo for about 400-425 rwh.
Also, is it common for a car with only 35k on the odometer to blow a transmission?
Aloha,
-clutch packs (hi-energy or even alto red clutches should work well.)
-sunshell (cant stress this enough...they break regularly. get a "beast" replacement shell...im sure there's info on where to get one on here somewhere.)
-hi energy or kevlar 2-4 band
most "built" trannies also include better servos, hardened shafts and drums, deep pans, shift kits and such as well.
you may want to add a shift kit for more precise shiftng and definitely look into a tranny cooler. this second one is ESSENTIAL if you go with an aftermarket torque converter (which, by the way, is a GREAT mod with excellent performance gains.) ask anyone else on here with a high stall and im sure they'll agree its some of the best money they ever spent on their car.
if you want to get another unit from a vendor, try FLP. i hear good things about them. good luck!
