??? I have a 2009 4L65E and installing the torque converter bolts was trivial with the starter motor removed. Looking at the pictures in the ATSG 4L60E Update manual, this area of the bell housing looks larger starting in 1998.

I would highly recommend a 2002-2008 trans. According to ATSG, starting with some 4L60E in 2001 and all in 2002, the Sun Shell, Thrust bearing and Reaction Carrier Shaft were updated/strengthened to handle the increase torque of LS2 engines. This seems to have solved most of the problems of pre-2001 transmissions destroying their sun shells.
(2009 and later transmissions are incompatible with earlier PCMs.)

I'm no transmission expert, just my opinion.
