Default WS6 Auto Trans!!!!!

Hello everyone, I just got a 2002 T/A WS6 Automatic, and was just curious about how strong these auto transmission are compare to other automatics out there? are they strong or what's their weak points? Also matted to a auto trans is the rear end really just not strong or is that kinda a myth about the m6 fbodys? any help would be greatly appreciated. The car just has intake and exhaust.

4L60E transmission stock is weaker than toilet paper. There are numerous weak points to them, perhaps most notably the notorious 3-4 clutch packs.

Our stock 10 bolt rear end is not exactly setting any records for strength. With an auto they tend to last longer, but they have broken even at stock power levels. FWIW I've seen people run it on the strip in the 700 hp range though, but never with an m6.

A 4L80E conversion and a 9" would set you up to be pretty much bullet proof for what you're application will likely ever produce.

=( that makes me sad. Is there any way to see if the transmission is showing signs of going out? like hard to get in gear or anything like that.

It can go either way, its a stock part. Don't expect anything and you won't be let down.

The ten bolt could be good for low 1.4 shorts times or let go with a 2.1 on street tires.

Auto could support 600Rwhp or start messing up tomorrow.

You should be fine with a ten bolt cutting 1.6s for a long time. You should be fine making 400Rwhp for a long time.
Either could go at any second.

I understand that completely, but im coming from a standard transmission. So is there any kind of things that show that an automatic might be going out down the road?

In my experience, as long as you keep your car stock except for small mods and aren't drag racing it every weekend, you're stock trans will probably last a long time. My car is stock with the stock trans (as far as I know), and has lasted for 150,000 miles. Others let go much sooner than that. But generally the less you beat on it, the longer it will last.

As for the 10-bolt, I would say that they are weaker than the 4l60E transmission! I blew one with my bone-stock V6 firebird! I've already had to have another one put in this car.

Bottom line: 4l60E is OK if not pushed/abused. 10-bolt=crap.
