Default tranny cooler ?'s

Ok, I'm doin a auto swap this winter & dont want to swap radiators as my current one is fairly new. So I'm lookin at running a external cooler only. Now I know the bigger the cooler the better, but what size is actually sufficient? I see most of them are rated by GVW (gross vehicle weight). So would one be correct to assume a cooler with a GVW rating of 15000 would work just fine. Like this one http://www.jegs.com/i/Derale/259/133...rentProductId=

I'm gonna try mounting it inside the front bumper. I'll trim out my front plate and add mesh like some of the FI guys are doin for a FMIC. I want to mount it vertically centered in the hole. That should give it plenty of airflow, keep it off the radiator/condenser area & keep it protected. I havent seen this done yet.

But I just wanna make sure I pick out a cooler that will be sufficient to do the job all by itself even in the hottest part of summer stuck in traffic.

See thats where I'm getting confused. You'd think naturally even with a stall that if you ran a cooler rated for a car/truck thats 3x the weight of a fully loaded WS6/SS that it would be more than sufficient. Yet you suggest a even bigger unit.

Is there a rule of thumb among the auto crowd on picking a cooler besides the bigger the better rule? Say space is a issue, like where I want to mount it. Is the cooler I listed not up to the job even though its rated for a 12k GVW & would be installed in a much lighter car?

If someone could give a little explanation it would be greatly appreciated.

to be honest, im still rather new to all this stuff as well but yea the bigger is better rule is good in this case and im sure others who know more about this subject will chime in. i just think that the bigger the cooler, the more capacity for fluid to go through, the cooler it will run. with you being down south and being in stop and go traffic like you said it will only benefit you more but im sure that the one you posted the link to will work fine.

Aww, finally one listed with a BTU rating. I was talkin to a good friend of mine & he said to try to find one thats rated around 40k BTU, but when I was looking around I only saw them listed with the GVW.

Yea, whatever cooler I go with needs to have threaded fittings cause I plan to run all braided hose with AN fittings. I dont wanna rely on hose clamps & rubber hose.

Look at the link again.. I posted just the cooler the first time, sorry. The one now is the a TH350 kit with everything you need minus the 45 or 90 degree hose ends for the tranny side.. The trans fittings in this kit should be the same for a 4l60.

Cool, thankx. Whats your opinion on my mounting idea? I figured if its good enough place for a FMIC its gotta be a good place for a tranny cooler.

And does anyone off hand know what fittings I'll need for connection to the tranny/6AN fitting on the hose?

My goal is to slowly piece all this swap together & then at the end of the year order a stall & built tranny. I just recently heard about PTC converters & the prices definitely fits a budget guys wallet compared to other options. And so far I havent seen any unhappy customers. So I might give either them or Circle D a call when its time.

The mounting idea should work fine if you got the room.. The fittings I believe are a 1/4" nps to -6, which that kit has.. That particular kit has straight hose ends & I think the 4l60 users say a 45 or 90 degree hose end is needed to clear the tunnel.. I was able to just use the supplied straight end with my Th350.. If you're going to piece together the cooler set-up, be sure to stay with a plate & fin style cooler.

Yea, I like the cooler in the link actually. From the dimensions of it there shouldn't be a mounting issue. Thats alot smaller than a FMIC stuffed in there. Should be able to make some 1/4" thk. flat bar brackets for it at work & just bolt it all up.
