Default shifter issues

i just installed a b&m ratchet shifter and i was adjusting the cable at the transmission when i noticed over a half inch of play in the shifter shaft going into the transmission. I couldn't adjust it right do to all the play and as i was playing with it i noticed that it started getting worse now i can practically move the shifter shaft without changing gears any ideas of what happened and will i have to pull the trany? or is this something fixable by just dropping the pan?

figured it out. the nut backed off the shifter shaft where it connects to the rooster piece causing it to not shift
