A little more detail on where the 'humming' is coming from? Rear? Front? Middle? Type of 'humming'?

Sometimes when Cats get old, they can rattle or hum. This happens at certain RPM's or at a certain speed/gear combination.

This is just a guess without hearing the car for myself. It could be something else. Just one thing to consider.

but it sounds like the noise is still there when the rpms drop and he is coasting at 55. I would lean towards checking u joints and rear. check the rear fluid level, put the car on stands, remove the driveshaft and check the u joints. while its out rotate the tires and listen close for any noise in the rear. if a bearing is failing you should hear something

if you think it's the rear put it up on jacks and put the car in drive. You can hear it if there is problem.
