Default 4L80E Build Problem

I'm DIY on this build and it's a first time thing having moved on from TH400's. I am at the froward drum and getting ready to install the boned piston and lo and behold the lip seal I have will not fit over the base of the drum and I can not lock the piston. Has anybody every encountered this. Is the lip seal just the wrong part? What could be the problem?

The picture below is the lip seal and the drum with the white shaded area showing where it just will not fit.

Pretty sure they are all the same size if in fact you have a drum that uses the steel bonded seal vs the lip seal style drum. The only difference I have seen is in the orifice size in the bonded part. Did you remove the bonded piece before trying to install the new one or is it possible that you are trying to install the bonded seal in an early drum that uses the lip seal? If so it wont work.

Thanks Vince--you hit it. It's the early style drum with the lip seal.

You can just leave that seal out.
